I try not to judge other parents as I don’t like to be judged myself. However, on the rare occasion I hire a babysitter to go out to eat without my kids, I don’t want to be surrounded by the same type of chaos I thought I left at home.
I really look forward to adult conversation and a quiet meal on those evenings.
It is extremely irritating to sit near a family with unruly kids when I’ve gone to great lengths to take a break from my own. And even more disturbing when the parents let it go on for too long. Sometimes I look over and the adults seem not to even notice the kids are acting up. Or perhaps they pretend they don’t hear the commotion because they either don’t know what to do, or they are simply inconsiderate people who are don’t care if they ruin the meal for others.
I am well aware none of us can control all our children all the time. We’ve all been there. However, if we are unable to calm our children, we do have the option to take them outside until they calm down or leave the restaurant altogether.
The most common response I’ve observed is the parents demand the child or children apologize. As if saying I’m sorry will help teach the appropriate lesson, which is that bad behavior is unacceptable in a restaurant.
